During his fashion studies, Bas Timmer heard that a friend's father had died of hypothermia while sleeping next to a closed emergency shelter. That event deeply affected Bas, especially since he himself made luxury outdoor clothing. It motivated him to do something for homeless people.
With an old sleeping bag and a tent, he designed a jacket that could also serve as a sleeping bag in five hours: the first Sheltersuit. He gave the suit to a homeless man, who even wanted to share it with friends in even worse conditions. That moment led to the production of the first hundred Sheltersuits and the establishment of the Sheltersuit Foundation.
Since 2014, the foundation has been active in multiple countries and produces locally adapted products. The Sheltersuits are produced by people with a distance to the labor market, often using upcycled materials. In this way, the foundation creates an impact that goes beyond just warmth: it is also about dignity and opportunities.
At Sheltersuit Foundation, they believe that everyone has the right to warmth, protection, and dignity. Since 2014, they have been designing and producing multifunctional products that directly provide shelter to people experiencing homelessness. The iconic Sheltersuit, a waterproof and windproof jacket that can be transformed into a sleeping bag, is made from upcycled materials and handcrafted in social workshops. In doing so, they not only offer protection to the most vulnerable but also create employment opportunities for people who are distanced from the labor market.
This mission aligns seamlessly with Poederbaas. Just like Sheltersuit, Poederbaas stands for functional, high-quality outdoor clothing that offers protection against extreme weather conditions. The shared focus on quality, sustainability, and responsibility makes collaboration a natural fit. With Poederbaas' technical expertise and Sheltersuit's social mission, design is utilized for impact.
Sheltersuit products are not a substitute for permanent housing, but an essential solution when no other options are available, and often a first step in restoring trust. Collaborations with partners like Poederbaas make it possible to further amplify this impact.

This travel bag was developed in collaboration with Sheltersuit Foundation. The Sheltersuit x Poederbaas travel bag is made from deadstock materials (excess, unused fabrics), is water and windproof, and is produced in the Netherlands in the Sheltersuit Foundation workshop. By having Sheltersuit produce it, we contribute to their social mission and support this impactful initiative.
