Today, Monday, March 16, a spectacular discipline was on the program during the Poederbaas Freeride Festival: the Dutch & Belgian Vertical Skimo Championships.
THE COURSE
The Vertical Skimo is an uphill time trial where participants complete a course upwards as quickly as possible. The course runs from the valley up to the finish on the mountain and has a length of 3.5 kilometers with approximately 600 meters of elevation gain. The fastest athletes reach the top well within an hour, while the maximum finish time is around 90 minutes. In total, 49 participants took part in the Vertical Skimo.

VERTICAL SKIMO
Skimo, or ski mountaineering, is a rapidly growing mountain sport and is becoming increasingly popular in the winter sports world. The discipline is also on the program of the 2026 Winter Olympics, which gives the sport a huge international boost. During the Poederbaas Freeride Festival, the Vertical Skimo forms a nice addition to freeriding. The competition brings together different types of athletes. From freeriders and mountaineers to trail runners and avid endurance athletes. For participants of the Poederbaas Dutch/Belgian Freeride Championships, participation in the Vertical Skimo is free.
